The Most Critical "Starting Line" of the Year for Cross-Border E-Commerce

Help Center2026-10-07

I. A "Collision-Hit" Golden Week: A Silent Battle of Preparation

The 2026 Golden Week is especially unusual for the cross-border e-commerce industry.

According to an official Amazon announcement, the 2026 autumn Prime Big Deal Days kicked off at 00:01 Pacific Time on October 6 and ran for 48 hours, covering Prime members in 22 countries and regions. And October 6 and 7 happen to be the last two days of this year's seven-day National Day holiday.

The result is a scene peculiar to the industry: staring at backend data on the return train, refreshing ad reports at the family dinner table. Many cross-border companies had to readjust their schedules — some decided to "take only five days off and have everyone back at their desks on October 6"; some arranged for staff to "report on the 6th and 7th, with time off afterward"; and still others, even without being formally required to show up, found themselves checking their stores on their phones at all hours: adjusting ad budgets that overrun, handling negative reviews that pop up, following up when competitors suddenly cut prices.

"Those two days of the big sale are among the most important traffic windows of the year — there's no way to leave a store unattended."

That remark, from the head of a mid-to-large cross-border company in Zhengzhou, captures what the whole industry feels. Golden Week is not a holiday — it is the starting gun for peak season.

II. Why October Is the Single Most Critical Month of the Year

To grasp the weight of October, you have to see the layout of the second-half promotional calendar:

Time

Marketing Event

Mid-Aug – early Sep

U.S. back-to-school season

Early October

Platform autumn sales (Prime Big Deal Days)

October 31

Halloween

November 27

Black Friday

November 30

Cyber Monday

December 25

Christmas

The true peak season lies at Black Friday and Christmas. Working backward from warehouse cut-off dates, every decision in October determines success or failure: Black Friday stock that should be in the warehouse is already there, and next comes the Christmas season — Europe's largest consumption peak of the year. The industry deadline for main Christmas inventory to be warehoused is late November, which makes early October the last window to lock in warehouse capacity and ship.

What's more urgent: 2026 Christmas has a "fatal calendar detail" — December 24 falls on a Thursday. In Germany and the Nordics, gifts are unwrapped on the evening of the 24th, with no Christmas-morning buffer — a parcel arriving on the 24th equals missing Christmas. The last full shopping weekend is December 19–20. Every deadline must be counted backward from that Thursday evening.

III. The Three Storylines Unfolding During Golden Week

The Golden Week bustle shows up on three levels.

1. On the export side: ports don't stop, and Chinese goods ship out faster

Shenzhen's Yantian Port launched a "no stoppage during the National Day holiday" mode. Batch after batch of Chinese goods — lighting, apparel, footwear — cleared inspection, was loaded into containers, and departed Yantian for the U.S., Mexico, the Netherlands, and other global markets. Yantian regularly operates more than a dozen cross-border e-commerce express lines and 38 sea-rail intermodal routes, with routes covering major trade regions including North America, Latin America, Europe, Australia–New Zealand, and Southeast Asia — stable in transit time, dense in schedule, and fast in clearance. This year, Chinese exports have shown new characteristics: more varied categories, a higher share of proprietary brands, and faster delivery-time requirements.

Shanghai Port is equally brisk. According to CCTV.com, cross-border e-commerce exports through Shanghai Port have surpassed RMB 100 billion this year, up nearly 30% year on year, holding double-digit growth for eight consecutive months — with Pudong Airport port ranking first nationwide in air-cargo cross-border e-commerce clearance volume for three straight years. The "master waybill + LCL consolidation" supervision model pioneered by the Waigaoqiao Port customs shortens consolidation time by 50% and saves about RMB 4,000 per TEU on average, solving the long-standing pain point for small and micro enterprises that "can't wait to fill a full container, and can't afford to ship alone."

Inside the Weihai Comprehensive Bonded Zone, cross-border e-commerce firms worked through the holiday without stoppage. The Cainiao warehouse currently holds steady at 40,000–50,000 orders per day, and after the holiday will climb gradually to 70,000–80,000 per day, peaking at around 100,000 during "Double 11." Platforms such as AliExpress and Coupang have already entered intensive preparation.

2. On the platform side: the autumn sale collides with the holiday, forcing rescheduling

As noted above, the overlap between Amazon's autumn sale and the National Day holiday became this year's most-discussed topic. It has also pushed the whole industry into peak-season rhythm ahead of time — the autumn sale is known in the industry as a "dress rehearsal for Black Friday"; the link weight and conversion data generated during it carry directly into Black Friday, so the higher the starting point, the fiercer the Black Friday breakout.

TikTok Shop has also been intensively advancing Q4 preparation around Golden Week. Its European-market stocking rhythm is clearly divided into six milestones: complete event registration by end of September; complete "water-storage" qualification from October 1–15; concentrated stocking and warehousing from October 16–31 (core products recommended to be warehoused before October 30); enter the Black Friday breakout in November; and capture Christmas long-tail traffic in December.

3. On the stocking side: the entire logistics chain accelerates

Golden Week coincides with the stocking period for overseas platforms' year-end sales. At the Songjiang air-cargo pre-station, daily shipments during the National Day holiday reached 100 tonnes — by "moving" the airport cargo station into the enterprise park, logistics costs drop 10%–15%, and through non-intrusive smart inspection equipment the vast majority of goods clear without delay, cutting logistics time by an average of 30%. Hubei's Ezhou Huahu International Airport handled an average of 30 flights daily during the holiday, with international cargo and mail throughput exceeding 380,000 tonnes in January–September, up 6.9% year on year and a record high for the same period.

IV. Six Things to Do to Seize Golden Week

Drawing on frontline peak-season experience, the following actions should be pushed forward during and shortly after Golden Week:

First, nail down the platform cut-off dates. The final Black Friday and Christmas cut-off dates for Amazon FBA, OTTO, and eBay official warehouses cluster in late October to early November. Deliveries must be booked in advance via Carrier Central or the official Cita system. Mainline warehouses overflow during peak season; being one hour late can mean an entire truckload is rejected, with demurrage running a hundred-plus euros per day. If you missed the first batch, immediately activate rail (14–18 days) or truck-air replenishment channels.

Second, use rolling replenishment instead of one big bet. Add stock in batches based on the sell-through data of the first shipment: decisively reorder SKUs that sell faster than expected — the cost of a stockout in peak season far outweighs carrying one extra batch. The classic allocation: 60%–70% of mainline inventory moves by sea and rail to control costs, keep 10% as emergency buffer, and in December use only air express for small replenishments. Ship slow-channel bulk again in December and it arrives next year.

Third, freeze localized content by November. Listing translations and holiday-themed decoration for the German, French, and Swedish sites must be done by November or they'll miss the indexing and inclusion window. Platform Deal slot submission deadlines also precede the sale by weeks — go to each platform's seller backend now and verify the submission deadlines.

Fourth, be bold in the inventory numbers you submit. Deal submission windows are closing one after another — Amazon's Lightning Deal submission must be made three to four weeks ahead. Be bold with the inventory figures you declare: if Deal inventory sells out mid-event, you're handing the traffic you won to the next seller. Set your internal deadline a week earlier than the official one to leave time for supplementary documents.

Fifth, recharge ad budgets 2–3 weeks ahead. Sale ads don't start on the day itself — begin increasing budgets for main ad groups two to three weeks out so the algorithm completes its learning phase before the event. Rankings for brand terms and core keywords should be secured by October; chase them in November and the CPC is two to three times the usual rate.

Sixth, watch carriers' Christmas cut-off tables. Peak-season capacity tightens, and booking lead times stretch from the usual three to five days to seven to fifteen working days. Destination-port de-stuffing, container pickup, and warehousing appointments also queue up — the "cargo arrived but you can't book a slot" scenario happens every year. End-to-end peak-season timing running one to two weeks longer than off-season is normal, and longer still when final-mile delivery meets holiday effects.

V. The Structural Opportunities Behind Golden Week

Zoom out, and the Golden Week bustle actually reflects several structural shifts in this year's cross-border e-commerce.

First, the "front-loading" of supply chains. Facing policies such as the EU's €3 temporary duty on parcels under €150 starting July 1, 2026, and the U.S.'s indefinite suspension of the $800 de minimis exemption, the direct-mail small-parcel model is receding. Data shows that overseas-warehouse-fulfilled orders now account for more than 62% of cross-border e-commerce export orders. This means much of the Golden Week bustle is about stocking overseas warehouses and preparing for local fulfillment.

Second, warehousing and fulfillment has become the biggest risk point. A recent survey shows 98% of surveyed sellers rank warehousing and fulfillment capability as a core risk. Temu, Shein, and AliExpress are using full-container shipping to grab European local warehouse capacity; traditional sellers and cross-border platforms compete for the same warehouses, so peak-season capacity tightness is structural. Whoever locks in warehouse capacity in October locks in peak-season shipping capability.

Third, content commerce opens an incremental track. TikTok Shop's unique content ecosystem opens Chinese sellers an incremental path distinct from traditional shelf-based platforms. The apparel track has strong year-end seasonal-change and gift demand; 3C electronics suit review-style short videos and live auctions; home goods and beauty/consumer products leverage holiday scenarios and gift sets. Industry estimates suggest well-prepared key merchants can see Black Friday GMV double, with peak sales days reaching 3–4 times the daily average.

Fourth, branding has become the long-term solution. Chinese goods going global are shifting from "product exports" to "brand exports" — the share of proprietary brands has risen markedly, and price wars are giving way to value creation.

VI. In Closing

The meaning of Golden Week for cross-border e-commerce practitioners has never been merely about "working overtime or not" — it is the starting point for the entire year's rhythm. Every action in October — locking capacity, submitting deals, stocking, recharging ads, freezing content — gets amplified many times over at Black Friday and Christmas.

Note that peak season is a double-edged sword: it amplifies traffic, conversion, and reputation — and equally amplifies shortcomings in inventory, pricing, and service. The Black Friday business has never been about "waiting for traffic or policy," but about doing the preparation before the breakout.

For sellers, perhaps the best way to spend Golden Week is exactly that line: while others are sightseeing, you're running the data; while others are heading home, your goods are already on the way.
